African American Mental Health

The practice of African American mental health includes, but extends beyond, the emphasis of the experience of racism and discrimination. Included in my practice, is combined insight oriented, psychoeducation, and emotion focused work aimed at cultivating a healthy African American identity.

Simply put, I assist clients or groups in examining internalized messages that are inconsistent with healthy self-esteem (i.e., slave mentality). This is followed by the use of interventions aimed at normalizing the feelings associated with the unique experience of being African American. Psychoeducation about concepts related to racial identity, African American history, and the psychology of the African American experience are integrated throughout the practice.
